Operated by Contoocook River Canoe Company · Concord, New Hampshire
Canoe, Kayak, & SUP Rentals on the Merrimack River in Concord, New Hampshire offers an immediate, low-friction way into river life. The operation runs Friday through Sunday and supplies single and tandem canoes, recreational kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards with paddles and U.S. Coast Guard–approved PFDs; staff help with loading and launching and you return to the same spot, so there’s no shuttle to arrange. The Merrimack here is broad and slow, a glacially shaped corridor where the current feels like a gentle nudge and the shoreline alternates between alder thickets, maple stands, and worn granite ledges.
Paddling this stretch is ideal for first-timers and families: currents are mild, line-of-sight across most channels is easy, and long, uninterrupted sightlines invite relaxed drifting. Look for great blue herons standing still along the banks, curious turtles sunning on logs, and occasional river otter slides along the mud. The landscape bears the mark of New England’s legacy—old mill towns and stone walls lie a short distance from the water, a reminder that the Merrimack powered industry here through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
What makes this rental spot special is its simplicity. There are no technical portages, no guided itineraries to follow and no need to schedule a shuttle—just straightforward equipment, clear staff instruction, and a safe, easy stretch of river to explore. Because the launch is close to Concord, paddlers can combine a morning on the water with a visit to downtown galleries, farmer’s markets, or the statehouse—human history and river ecology sit side by side.
Practical notes: rentals are available in half-day and full-day formats; check the operator’s Friday–Sunday schedule. Bring sunscreen, a hat, waterproof layers, and a dry bag for your phone. Keep voices low around wildlife, and secure food to avoid attracting animals. If you’re trying SUP for the first time choose a wide, stable board and practice kneeling before standing.
This is not a wilderness river run; instead it’s a quietly scenic, low-stakes paddle that introduces novices to river rhythms and gives families a safe, memorable outdoor half-day. Paddlers who want longer trips or more solitude can use this outing as a stepping stone—learn basic strokes here, then plan longer downstream runs in less developed stretches of the Merrimack. For a gentle, accessible day afloat in central New Hampshire, these rentals are a straightforward, well-run option.
Children should be supervised at all times; life jackets are mandatory and instructors will fit PFDs for young paddlers. The operation does not list specific age limits or accessibility options in published description, so call ahead if you have special needs. Expect a relaxed pace, chances to spot spring and fall migration, and easy logistics that make paddling approachable for first-time visitors.
