Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Ards Forest Park is located near Creeslough in County Donegal, Ireland, stretching over approximately 480 hectares along the wild Atlantic coast. Established in the early 20th century, the park is managed by Coillte and offers a unique blend of mature conifer plantations interspersed with native deciduous trees and open grasslands. The park’s geography is marked by steep cliffs, sandy beaches, and rocky coves, providing stunning views of Sheephaven Bay and the rugged coastline. Ecologically, the park supports diverse birdlife including peregrine falcons, sparrowhawks, and various seabirds, alongside deer and small mammals. Historically, the land was part of the Ards Estate and retains remnants of estate-era landscaping and paths. Visitors can enjoy several well-maintained walking trails that range from gentle woodland strolls to more challenging cliff-top hikes. Notable landmarks include the iconic Ards Forest cliffs, the tidal beach at Portnablagh, and the sheltered Blue Flag beach of Ards Pier. The park is popular for hiking, birdwatching, cycling, and picnicking, attracting both casual visitors and dedicated nature enthusiasts. Its combination of coastal and forest environments offers a rich, tranquil experience with easy accessibility from nearby towns.
