Quill Lakes Important Bird Area Adventures

Quill Lakes Important Bird Area encompasses the interconnected system of three saline lakes—Big Quill Lake, Middle Quill Lake, and Little Quill Lake—located in east-central Saskatchewan. Covering thousands of hectares, the lakes and their surrounding wetlands form one of Canada’s most important inland habitats for migratory birds. The saline conditions create a unique ecological environment that supports numerous invertebrates and brine shrimp, which in turn attract significant populations of migratory shorebirds and waterfowl. Notably, it serves as a critical staging area during spring and fall migrations, hosting hundreds of thousands of birds including sandpipers, plovers, ducks, geese, and the threatened piping plover. Ecologically, the area supports diverse marsh and grassland ecosystems, as well as important breeding grounds for various bird species. The lakes are surrounded by mixed grass prairie and farmland. Access is primarily by vehicle with viewing sites and surrounding rural roads offering birdwatching vantage points. Because of this, the area attracts birders, photographers, and naturalists interested in observing migratory patterns and rare bird species. Although not managed as a formal park, conservation efforts are led by organizations like Ducks Unlimited and Bird Studies Canada to protect habitat quality and water levels. Visitors appreciate the peaceful, open landscapes and abundant wildlife viewing. While there are no formal campgrounds or trails within the IBA designation, nearby towns provide accommodations and supplies. The Quill Lakes region is especially popular during spring migration when large flocks temporarily rest and feed prior to continuing north.
