Green Escapes at Kenney Park

Scenic Recreation at Kenney Park, Columbus, Ohio

Kenney Park offers a refreshing green space in Columbus, Ohio, ideal for sports enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Located near the Olentangy River, this park stands out for its combination of open sports fields and a wooded area that reaches the riverbanks. Visitors appreciate the balance between active recreation spaces and peaceful natural surroundings, making it a favored destination for local families and outdoor hobbyists. The park’s standout feature is its wide soccer fields with full-size nets, a baseball diamond, and a sledding hill, providing diverse options for enjoying outdoor activities across seasons.

The grounds confirm its role as a community hub where local teams often gather, especially for youth soccer sessions in the early evenings. While the field surface sees frequent use and may benefit from occasional upkeep, it remains a reliable spot for casual play or practice games. Adjacent wooded trails offer direct access to the Olentangy River, with scenic views and opportunities to spot native flora and mature trees. These trails are more rustic, composed of sand and earth, sprinkled with roots and rocks that add character to a nature walk but require proper footwear and bug repellent, especially in warmer months.

Historically, Kenney Park has served as a local outdoor meeting point for decades, blending community activities with natural beauty. Although amenities are modest—with parking limited and only one portable restroom—the park’s charm comes from its spacious, open-air layout and the chance to engage with both sports and a riverside environment. Whether taking a quiet stroll along the river’s edge or joining an energetic pickup soccer game, Kenney Park offers a versatile outdoor experience in the heart of Columbus.
