Waterfall Wonder: Chasm Falls near Estes Park

Chasm Falls, located within the stunning Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado, offers visitors a refreshing encounter with nature’s power and calm. This striking waterfall spills over a rugged series of granite ledges along Old Fall River, forming a wide curtain of rushing water framed by dense evergreens and rocky crags. Unlike busier park areas, Chasm Falls remains a somewhat quieter spot, making it a perfect destination for those seeking both beauty and serenity amid the Rockies.

The falls can be easily accessed from Old Fall River Road, a historic route with sweeping views of alpine landscapes and wildlife. One of the distinctive features here is the multi-tiered cascade tumbling over dark Precambrian rock formations—ancient stone shaped by glaciers and weather for millions of years. This geological backdrop contrasts with vibrant wildflowers in warmer months and patches of snow in spring, adding seasonal charm.

Besides its natural allure, Chasm Falls is a scenic highlight on this less-traveled stretch of the park, appealing to photographers and casual hikers alike. Steps and an overlook provide clear vantage points to admire the falls’ flow and the surrounding forest. Occasionally, visitors spot local wildlife, including bighorn sheep and deer, adding an extra layer of excitement to the visit.

This location connects visitors to the region’s storied past. Old Fall River Road was the park’s original scenic route dating back to the 1920s, giving modern travelers a glimpse of early park access alongside dramatic mountain vistas.
