About this landmark
Turnagain Arm Trail, Northern Trailhead near Anchorage, Alaska, offers a remarkable vantage point along the breathtaking Turnagain Arm coastline. This trailhead is a gateway to stunning landscapes where mountains meet the sea, showcasing the dramatic interaction of the Kenai Mountains and the tide-influenced waters of Turnagain Arm. The area stands out for its unique geological features—steep fjord-like cliffs rise sharply from the water, and the tidal fluctuations here are among the highest in the world, often revealing vast stretches of tidal flats during low tide. Visitors can appreciate the rugged charm of coastal vegetation and may spot local wildlife such as Dall sheep, bald eagles, and beluga whales in the bay. The trail runs through mixed boreal forest dominated by spruce and birch trees, offering rich ecological variety and seasonal color changes. Historically, Turnagain Arm was named by Captain Cook in 1778 for the difficult navigation that forced ships to "turn again." This northern trailhead provides direct access to hiking routes with panoramic views over the water and surrounding peaks, making it a prime location for photographers and outdoor enthusiasts. It’s an ideal spot to witness the natural beauty of Alaska’s coastal wilderness, especially during clear weather when the interplay of light, water, and mountains creates unforgettable scenery.
