Virgin Falls

Virgin Falls Waterfall Experience in Tennessee

Virgin Falls is a remarkable natural feature located near Sparta in Middle Tennessee’s rugged Cumberland Plateau region. This striking waterfall is one of the area’s rare underground stream waterfalls, where water bursts dramatically from a cave, plunges over 110 feet, and vanishes again into a deep sinkhole. The waterfall’s unique flow pattern, visible only at its cascade, creates a captivating scene unlike any other in Tennessee.

The falls sit within Virgin Falls State Natural Area, spanning over 1,100 acres of protected forest and limestone bluffs. The region’s karst geology shapes the landscape with caves, sinkholes, and underground streams—a playground for geology fans and nature lovers alike. Towering hardwood forests surround the falls, supporting diverse plants and wildlife, including occasional sightings of unusual creatures such as armadillos. The area’s varied elevation offers scenic overlooks, including Martha’s Point, where sweeping views of the forested plateau unfold.

Visitors appreciate the challenge and beauty of the hiking trail leading to Virgin Falls. This roughly 8 to 10-mile out-and-back route involves a 1,200-foot elevation change and traverses mixed terrain, including rocky creek beds and forest paths. Along the way, several smaller waterfalls and an open cave at Big Laurel Falls add interest. Many hikers recommend taking the trail to the top of Virgin Falls to witness the water emerge from the cave mouth—an impressive geological marvel.

With its dramatic water flow, impressive height, and fascinating geology, Virgin Falls is a striking natural destination in Tennessee. It offers a rewarding experience for those eager to witness something rare and scenic in the state’s outdoor landscape.
