Sandstone Falls

Sandstone Falls: Natural Wonder of West Virginia

Sandstone Falls, located near the scenic city of Hinton in southern West Virginia, stands out as one of the most remarkable features within the New River Gorge National Park. This expansive waterfall stretches impressively across the New River, offering visitors a captivating view that blends wild water, rugged sandstone formations, and the region’s rich natural heritage. Unlike typical waterfalls, Sandstone Falls is wide and segmented, with water rushing powerfully through numerous channels carved out of ancient sandstone rock, creating a dynamic and visually stunning spectacle.

The falls are formed by resilient sandstone layers, which create unusual cascades and rapids as the New River flows over them. This geological formation is a signature element of the area, illustrating the enduring force of nature over millions of years. Visitors often note the ease of access, thanks to a well-maintained boardwalk and gentle trails that allow close-up views from multiple vantage points. Alongside the falls, picnic benches and restrooms provide comfortable amenities for a relaxed outing.

Historically, Sandstone Falls has been a key location for local Native American tribes and early settlers who recognized the river’s importance both for travel and resources. The New River itself ranks among the oldest rivers in North America, adding geological significance to the site.

With its expansive, multi-tiered waterfall and striking sandstone bedrock, Sandstone Falls offers a unique look at West Virginia’s rugged landscape and waterpower. Seasonal changes transform the scene from tranquil and reflective in summer droughts to roaring and dramatic after heavy rainfall, making it a captivating destination at any time of year.
