Wetlands & Wildlife at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, located near Columbia in northeastern North Carolina, stands out for its expansive wetlands and unique pocosin habitat—a type of dense, shrubby bog found in the southeastern U.S. The refuge covers over 110,000 acres of swamps, marshes, and forests, serving as a critical sanctuary for diverse wildlife and plants uncommon in other parts of the region. It is especially notable as a key wintering ground for migratory waterfowl, including thousands of tundra swans that visitors often mention as a highlight.

Visitors to Pocosin Lakes will encounter well-maintained boardwalks weaving through wetlands, allowing close-up views of aquatic life such as turtles, fish, and crabs. The refuge is one of the few remaining habitats for the endangered red wolf, making wildlife observation here particularly special. Seasonal changes dramatically alter the landscape: from the lush green spring blooms to the vibrant migrations during winter, visitors experience distinctly different moods of nature year-round.

The refuge also offers a rich educational experience with well-staffed visitor centers where guests can learn about local ecology and conservation efforts. Though parts of the refuge can be closed to protect sensitive areas, the accessible trails and observation platforms provide ample opportunities for wildlife viewing and peaceful nature walks. The blend of forest, water, and peatland landscapes makes Pocosin Lakes a unique outdoor destination in North Carolina’s Atlantic Coastal Plain region.

This refuge is cherished by nature lovers looking to immerse themselves in quiet, natural settings where wildlife flourishes away from urban life. Its remote location and extensive habitats provide both tranquility and fascinating encounters with the natural world for visitors of all ages.
