O'Leno State Park

Scenic Wonders of O'Leno State Park in High Springs

O'Leno State Park, located near High Springs in northern Florida, offers a rare glimpse into one of the region’s most fascinating natural phenomena—the Santa Fe River disappearing underground, only to resurface miles away. This park stands out as a unique destination where visitors can witness the river's vanishing act amidst dense hardwood forests and abundant wildlife. The park’s landscape features rolling trails shaded by towering oaks and pines, with habitats supporting deer, turtles, alligators, and diverse bird species. Its blend of natural beauty and intriguing geology makes O'Leno a captivating stop for anyone interested in Florida’s wilderness beyond its famous beaches.

A historic touch enhances the experience here. Many structures, including cabins and a suspension bridge (currently closed for repairs), were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, adding a layer of cultural heritage to the park’s natural charm. Remnants of a former town and old grist mill foundations offer curious visitors a view into the area’s past. The park’s trails include paths along the riverbank and routes leading to the points where the river sinks into underground caves and where it reappears, providing an unusual perspective on Florida's karst landscape.

The peaceful atmosphere and scenic views attract hikers, campers, paddle enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a quiet spot in the wilderness. Despite some maintenance concerns mentioned by recent visitors, O'Leno remains a remarkable destination combining ecological interest, outdoor recreation, and a touch of history in the High Springs region.
