Scenic Summit: Max Patch, North Carolina

Max Patch is a remarkable bald mountain located in the Appalachian region of Western North Carolina, near the small town of Hot Springs. This open grassy knob rises to an elevation of 4,629 feet, offering expansive views that stretch across the Blue Ridge Mountains and into neighboring states on clear days. Unlike the heavily forested peaks typical of the Appalachians, Max Patch’s wide summit is covered in lush grass and wildflowers, creating a rare natural meadow environment high above the tree line.

This unique landscape was once used for cattle grazing, and today, it serves as a cherished stop along the iconic Appalachian Trail. From the top, visitors can take in 360-degree panoramas of rolling hills and distant ridgelines, making it a favorite destination for photographers, hikers, and those seeking peaceful outdoor moments. The open, breezy summit also provides excellent conditions for kite flying and star gazing, thanks to minimal light pollution and unobstructed skies.

Max Patch’s striking contrast of grassy bald with surrounding forest highlights an uncommon geological feature—a natural bald sustained by a combination of soil and climate conditions. It is managed carefully to maintain its open character, preventing tree overgrowth to preserve its scenic value for generations.

Whether visiting in spring when wildflowers bloom or in autumn with crisp air and clear skies, Max Patch offers an unforgettable experience for anyone looking to enjoy a panoramic mountain vista close to Asheville and surrounding areas.
