Ancient Forest Wonders at Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, located near Robbinsville in the scenic Cheoah Ranger District of North Carolina’s Nantahala National Forest, is a rare relic of untouched wilderness. This remarkable area protects one of the eastern United States’ most significant stands of old-growth forest, where towering hardwood trees have thrived for over 400 years. The forest stands apart because of its incredibly large tulip poplars, some exceeding 20 feet in circumference and soaring over 100 feet tall, creating a majestic canopy that defines the landscape. Beyond the impressive tree sizes, the forest hosts a rich diversity of plants, including ferns, mosses, and wildflowers, alongside clear mountain streams. The setting provides a tranquil retreat away from the usual bustle, where visitors can breathe in the fresh mountain air and enjoy the gentle sounds of nature.

Named after the poet Joyce Kilmer, whose famous poem "Trees" celebrates the beauty of the natural world, the forest functions as both a living museum and a memorial. The preserve is especially prized for its well-maintained hiking trails that allow easy access to the heart of this primeval forest. Educational signs along the trails inform visitors about the unique ecosystem and the ecological importance of old-growth forests. Whether walking the easy 1.25-mile loop or pausing by the quiet streams, visitors experience a profound connection to nature’s enduring strength and patience. This location is a standout destination for anyone interested in seeing some of the oldest and largest trees in the eastern U.S. and appreciating a relatively untouched environment that offers quiet reflection and scenic beauty.
