Jekyll Island

Postcard Overview: Jekyll Island – Coastal Gem of Georgia

Jekyll Island, located along Georgia’s southern coast, is a compelling destination that combines pristine beaches, rich history, and abundant natural beauty. This barrier island boasts miles of unspoiled sandy shores alongside dense maritime forests and extensive salt marshes, creating varied habitats that draw wildlife lovers and beachgoers alike. The island’s most famous landmark, Driftwood Beach, features dramatic bleached tree trunks scattered across the sand, offering a striking scene for photographers and peaceful walkers. The island’s historical district preserves elegant Gilded Age architecture, reflecting its past as an exclusive retreat for wealthy American families in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Jekyll Island is a state park open to all, providing a mix of outdoor recreation opportunities and cultural experiences.

Distinctive natural features such as sand dunes, maritime forests with ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and tidal creeks make the area ecologically diverse. Visitors often spot shorebirds, sea turtles, and deer roaming freely. The quiet atmosphere and well-maintained beaches allow for relaxing strolls without the congestion common at other coastal spots. Additionally, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center educates guests on conservation efforts while caring for injured turtles. By day, visitors may bike around the island’s flat trails or walk along its protected shores; by night, they can appreciate calm starlit skies away from city lights. Jekyll Island provides a balanced experience of nature and heritage, making it a distinctive stop on Georgia’s coast for outdoor enthusiasts, history fans, and families seeking fresh air and tranquility.
