Fontana Lake

Scenic Vista: Fontana Lake, North Carolina

Fontana Lake is a shining jewel of the Appalachian Highlands, located near the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina. Stretching over 29 miles, this expansive reservoir is carved by the mighty Fontana Dam, the tallest dam east of the Mississippi River at 480 feet. The lake’s striking clear waters reflect the rugged peaks and dense forests of the surrounding Nantahala National Forest, creating a breathtaking setting for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Visitors will find themselves surrounded by rich natural diversity, from towering hardwood trees to abundant wildlife such as deer, black bears, and a variety of bird species common to this region. The lake's shoreline, which extends to 238 miles, offers peaceful coves and quiet beaches ideal for swimming and paddling. The dam itself, completed in 1944 as part of a major hydroelectric project during World War II, provides both a historical point of interest and a dramatic backdrop to the lake’s calm surface.

Fontana Lake hosts portions of the famous Appalachian Trail, where hikers can cross the Fontana Dam and take in panoramic views of the valley below. The lake is also renowned for excellent fishing, including trout and bass, thanks to its cool mountain waters. Seasonal changes add to the lake’s charm—autumn brings vibrant leaf colors that frame the water, while summer invites boaters and families to enjoy tubing and swimming in warm, sunny weather.

Its combination of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and historical significance makes Fontana Lake a distinctive destination in Western North Carolina.
