Discover the Sandscape Magic

Sand Dunes & Coastal Majesty: Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area - Siuslaw National Forest

Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, located near Reedsport on Oregon’s Pacific Coast, offers one of the most striking natural landscapes in the region. Stretching approximately 40 miles between Florence and Coos Bay, this vast stretch of rolling sand dunes ranks as the largest coastal dune system in North America. What sets this destination apart is its expansive sandy terrain shaped by forces over millions of years, reaching heights of up to 500 feet. These dunes rise boldly against the backdrop of dense forests and wetlands, creating a rare combination of ecosystems in one place.

Along with the grand sand formations, visitors will find dune wetlands and patches of Sitka spruce and western hemlock, supporting diverse wildlife including a variety of shorebirds and amphibians adapted to this environment. The dunes owe their origin to geological activity dating back more than 55 million years, with ongoing wind and water patterns constantly reshaping the landscape. For many, the feeling of vastness here—walking barefoot on sand that stretches in all directions—is unlike any other coastal experience in the Pacific Northwest.

Historically, the area has been cherished for recreation since the mid-20th century when motorized vehicle use was permitted, opening up thrilling ways to experience the dunes. This protected zone within the Siuslaw National Forest invites outdoor enthusiasts to witness nature's raw, shifting beauty where sand meets ocean, sky, and forest in a spectacular coastal scene. It’s a destination that delivers striking views and memorable adventures at the edge of the wild Oregon coast.
