Discover the Majesty of Steens Mountain

Stunning Views of Steens Mountain, Oregon

Steens Mountain, rising high in Oregon’s southeastern high desert near the small town of Frenchglen, stands out as one of the state’s most dramatic and remote natural landmarks. This massive fault-block mountain reaches over 9,700 feet in elevation, offering visitors sweeping panoramas of deep glacial canyons, alpine ridges, and the vast, open Alvord Desert stretching below. Known for its striking contrasts, the mountain’s rugged terrain changes from sagebrush plains to snow-capped peaks, supporting a rich variety of wildlife including wild horses and bobcats.

The mountain is famous for the Steens Mountain Loop Road, the highest drivable road in Oregon, which climbs steeply beside cliffs and offers multiple overlooks where the expansive desert and deeply carved U-shaped canyons unfold beneath. Among the impressive geological features, Kiger Gorge stands out—a deep glacial canyon carved by ancient ice ages and one of the largest U-shaped canyons in North America. In spring and summer, colorful wildflowers brighten the slopes, while winter light dusts the peaks with snow, transforming the landscape.

Steens Mountain has cultural significance as well, with open-range cattle grazing and marked private lands indicating ongoing ranching traditions. Though remote, the area offers campgrounds and well-marked hiking trails, such as the challenging descent to Wildhorse Lake, ideal for those seeking solitude and natural beauty. Visitors praise the quiet wilderness and dramatic views as unlike anything else in Oregon, making Steens Mountain a must-see for those looking to experience the state’s diverse landscapes beyond the well-known parks.

Whether viewing the Alvord Desert from the summit or hiking down to crystal-clear alpine lakes, Steens Mountain delivers a powerful encounter with nature’s soaring scale and variety.
