Crabtree Falls

Waterfall Wonder at Crabtree Falls, North Carolina

Crabtree Falls, located near Asheville in North Carolina’s scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, stands out as one of the tallest and most striking waterfalls in the region. This destination draws visitors with its stunning series of cascades that drop nearly 70 feet over a rugged rock face, framed by forested slopes alive with seasonal colors. The falls gained their name from the crabapple trees that bloom nearby, lending seasonal flair to the lush environment. The site provides a refreshing contrast to other nearby attractions with its combination of easily accessible beauty and a moderately challenging hike that rewards visitors with both movement and awe-inspiring scenery.

The trail to the falls offers several viewpoints where the rushing water can be admired from different angles, while smooth rock formations and pools invite brief moments of rest. The area's geology is defined by weathered, ancient Appalachian rock, creating textured cliffs that enhance the waterfall’s powerful flow. Hikers often mention the ever-present sound of water as a calming backdrop to the vibrant forest, which is home to native plants like rhododendron and mountain laurels. The falls are a popular spot in spring and fall, when wildflowers and autumn leaves paint the landscape with vibrant hues.

Crabtree Falls holds historical significance within the Blue Ridge Parkway corridor, a protected scenic route established in the 1930s, combining recreation with conservation.
