Black Balsam Knob

Scenic Summit Views at Black Balsam Knob

Black Balsam Knob is a striking mountain peak located in the heart of the Appalachian Highlands, near Asheville in western North Carolina. Part of the Pisgah National Forest, this spot stands out due to its expansive bald summit—an open, grassy area free of trees that delivers uninterrupted 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Unlike many forested peaks in the region, Black Balsam’s unique exposed terrain offers a rare chance to see rolling ridges stretching into the distance on clear days, creating a remarkable panoramic experience.

The knob covers an elevation of about 6,214 feet, making it one of the highest points in the area. Its open summit features granitic rock formations and patches of vibrant wildflowers during spring and summer, adding bursts of color against the green grasses. The Art Loeb Trail passes over this peak, inviting visitors to traverse a mix of open balds and dense forest throughout a challenging yet rewarding hike. Locally, these balds are recognized as historical grazing fields once used by early settlers, adding a layer of cultural history to the natural landscape visitors enjoy today.

During dawn and dusk, the knob becomes a favored destination for photographers and nature admirers keen on capturing breathtaking sunrises and sunsets over the mountain ridge lines. Camping is permitted in the area, providing an opportunity to experience early morning mists and quiet starry nights above the treeline. With its combination of geological interest, outstanding views, and easy access from nearby towns, Black Balsam Knob remains a memorable destination for anyone seeking a refreshing high-altitude retreat in the southern Appalachians.
