Alum Cave Bluffs

Scenic Landmark: Alum Cave Bluffs, Tennessee

Alum Cave Bluffs, set within the Great Smoky Mountains near Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is one of the region’s most striking natural attractions. This site is distinguished by its dramatic overhanging bluff, carved from ancient sandstone and limestone, creating an impressive geological formation along a popular hiking trail. The rugged cliff face, extending nearly 80 feet high, provides a breathtaking contrast against the vibrant green of the surrounding rhododendrons and mountain laurels. This blend of rock and flora is unique to the Smokies’ mid-elevation zones, offering visitors a memorable encounter with the area's diverse ecosystem.

The path to Alum Cave Bluffs begins with shaded forest walkways and meanders beside clear, rushing streams. The spot carries historical significance as well — during the Civil War era, the area served as a source of saltpeter, a crucial component of gunpowder. This adds a fascinating layer of human history to the striking natural environment. The bluffs themselves were named for the mineral deposits once thought to resemble alum on the cliff’s surface.
