Cragway Trail: Grandfather Mountain’s Steep, Scenic Ascent - Cragways Trail
Grandfather Mountain isn’t one for gentle introductions, and the Cragway Trail proves it. This steep, rugged, and stunningly scenic route climbs through some of the most exposed and dramatic terrain in the park, delivering massive views, rocky scrambles, and an unmistakable sense of wildness.
Winding its way up from the Nuwati Trail, the Cragway Trail lives up to its name with sheer rock outcrops, tight switchbacks, and ledges that drop away into the valley below. Every step brings more of the landscape into view—rolling ridgelines, thick rhododendron tunnels, and the distant haze of the Blue Ridge stretching to the horizon.
At just 1.1 miles, it’s a short climb—but don’t let that fool you. The elevation gain is relentless, and the exposed sections leave no room for mistakes. The payoff, however, is breathtaking. Top Crag View, a rocky outcrop perched high above the valley, offers a moment of reward—a raw, untamed overlook where the wind rushes past and the mountains feel infinite.
For those looking to push further, Cragway connects seamlessly into the Daniel Boone Scout Trail, leading toward Calloway Peak, the highest point on Grandfather Mountain. But even if you turn back at Top Crag View, you’ve already hiked one of the wildest, most exhilarating trails in the park.
The Cragway Trail is one of Grandfather Mountain’s most rugged routes, featuring steep climbs, rock scrambles, and high-exposure ledges. Connecting the Nuwati Trail to the Daniel Boone Scout Trail, it’s a challenging yet rewarding way to experience some of the best views in the park.
Cragway Trail to Top Crag View (2.2 miles round trip, strenuous)
Cragway & Nuwati Trail Loop (~4 miles, moderate to strenuous)
The Cragway Trail isn’t just a route—it’s a test of balance, endurance, and respect for the mountain. If you’re up for the challenge, it delivers an experience that’s as wild and raw as Grandfather Mountain itself.
