Dark Mountain Park: Where Trails Test the Bold
Some trails invite you in gently. Dark Mountain Park isn’t one of them. This is a place where the terrain keeps you on edge, where the deep woods press in, and where the climbs aren’t just uphill—they’re a challenge to your grit. If you’re in Wilkesboro and your legs are itching for an adrenaline-fueled ride or hike, this is where you go.
The Ride: Fast, Technical, and Unforgiving
Originally designed as a mountain biking paradise, Dark Mountain’s 6.4-mile loop is a technical masterpiece. Root-laced switchbacks, punchy climbs, and banked turns carve through the hardwood forest, daring you to pick up speed. The trail drops and rises with an unpredictable rhythm, ensuring you’re never coasting for long.
Somewhere in the middle, the infamous rock garden reminds you that momentum is your friend—and hesitation is not. It’s the kind of place where beginners become better riders and veterans get reminded why they love the sport.
More Than Just a Bike Park
Not a mountain biker? No problem. The same rugged trails welcome hikers and trail runners looking for a heart-pounding workout with some of the best views of Kerr Scott Reservoir. The lake, shimmering through the trees, offers a moment of serenity between the climbs. But don’t linger too long—the next uphill is waiting.
For those seeking a longer adventure, Dark Mountain connects to the larger Overmountain Victory Trail system, meaning you can extend your journey well beyond the park itself.
