Al Dinder National Park

Wildlife and Wilderness at Al Dinder National Park

Al Dinder National Park, located in eastern Sudan near the city of Dinder, is one of the country’s most notable natural reserves. Established in 1935, this vast protected area covers over 7,000 square kilometers, offering a rich blend of ecosystems from thorn bush savanna in the north to dense woodlands and swampy gallery forests along the Hawawir and Dinder rivers. These diverse habitats support an impressive range of wildlife, making it a standout destination in Sudan’s wilderness.

The park is particularly known for its populations of large mammals such as lions, giraffes, roan antelopes, and hartebeests, alongside smaller but fascinating species like dik-diks and bushbucks. Visitors might also catch sight of black rhinoceros, elephants, and elusive big cats like leopards and cheetahs, though these are rarer. Birdlife is abundant, with more than 160 species recorded, including the striking Sudan golden sparrow and Egyptian plover. This park forms an important biological corridor between Sudan and Ethiopia, supporting migratory birds traveling along Africa-Eurasia flyways.

With its blend of riverine forests, savanna plains, and woodland areas dotted with pools, Al Dinder offers scenic views and a living snapshot of the region’s wildlife heritage. The park’s role in conservation has earned it a UNESCO biosphere reserve status, underscoring its importance to biodiversity preservation. Accessible by road from Khartoum, visitors appreciate the chance to encounter authentic African wildlife in a largely untouched environment far from urban crowds.

Whether interested in animals, birds, or plant life, Al Dinder National Park provides a memorable chance to witness Sudan’s diverse natural landscapes and species in one remarkable setting.
