Capers Island, a pristine barrier island located just north of Charleston, offers a paddling adventure like no other. Accessible only by boat, this undeveloped island is a haven for wildlife, natural beauty, and serenity. With its iconic Boneyard Beach, sprawling salt marshes, and lush maritime forest, Capers Island promises an unforgettable experience for kayakers and paddleboarders eager to explore the Lowcountry’s untamed coastline.
Launch your paddle from the Gadsdenville Public Boat Landing or Isle of Palms Marina. The paddle to Capers Island is approximately 3–4 miles one way, taking you through the winding creeks and expansive marshlands of the Intracoastal Waterway. Depending on your launch point and paddling pace, the journey can take 1.5 to 2.5 hours each way.
As you paddle, the natural beauty of the Lowcountry surrounds you. Spartina grass sways gently in the breeze, and you may spot dolphins surfacing nearby or schools of fish darting beneath your board. Keep an eye on the skies for ospreys, pelicans, and other coastal birds. The approach to Capers is particularly striking, as the island’s undisturbed shores and iconic driftwood sculptures of Boneyard Beach come into view.
Capers Island is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Charleston to the launch points. Gadsdenville Boat Landing and Isle of Palms Marina are both easily accessible.
