About SACO National Wildlife Refuge

SACO National Wildlife Refuge protects vital habitats along the Saco River in southern Maine, offering rich wildlife viewing and scenic trails in a diverse riverine and wetland landscape.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

SACO National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1992, encompasses over 2,385 acres along the lower Saco River in southern Maine. The refuge consists primarily of wetlands, riverine woodlands, tidal marshes, shrublands, and floodplain forests, creating a rich habitat for a variety of species. It forms an important corridor for migratory birds, waterfowl, and other wildlife. The area plays a significant ecological role in flood control, water filtration, and supporting biodiversity in this region. It also preserves the natural floodplain dynamics of the Saco River, which contribute to the health of downstream ecosystems including Saco Bay. Visitors have the opportunity to explore a network of unpaved trails and boardwalks that meander through the refuge’s habitats, providing excellent wildlife observation points. Birdwatchers will find numerous species here, including migratory songbirds, raptors, and waterfowl, especially during spring and fall migrations. The refuge is also suitable for photography, nature study, and educational outings. It does not have developed campgrounds or overnight facilities, focusing on daytime visits for low-impact recreation. The refuge’s location near the towns of Saco, Biddeford, and Scarborough makes it accessible for local residents and travelers. It stands out as a protected area dedicated to conserving critical wetland and riverine ecosystems in an increasingly developed coastal region. Overall, SACO National Wildlife Refuge is an important natural area offering peaceful access to diverse habitats and wildlife, with a focus on conservation and environmental education.
