About Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge

Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is a vital habitat in northwest Ohio featuring wetlands, marshes, and grasslands that attract diverse migratory birds and wildlife enthusiasts. It offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and nature study throughout much of the year.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge spans approximately 6,000 acres of diverse ecosystems located along the southern shore of Lake Erie in Lucas and Ottawa Counties, Ohio. Established in 1961, the refuge serves as critical breeding, feeding, and resting grounds for migratory birds within the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways. The refuge's landscape is dominated by wetlands, flooded marshes, wet meadows, open water ponds, and upland grasslands that support a broad variety of wildlife species. It is especially renowned for being one of the premier locations for observing migratory waterfowl, including ducks, geese, and swans, as well as other species such as sandhill cranes and the rare bald eagle. The refuge is also a recognized Important Bird Area (IBA) by the Audubon Society.

Visitors can explore the refuge through a network of walking trails and observation decks, including the Moorehead Marsh Trail, which offers exceptional wildlife viewing. Seasonal activities focus largely on birdwatching, photography, and environmental education programs. The refuge hosts special events during peak migration seasons in spring and fall when bird activity is at its highest. Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge has become a favored destination for wildlife photographers, naturalists, and family outings seeking quiet encounters with nature.

The refuge also plays a critical role in habitat restoration and wetland conservation efforts, including invasive species management and native plant reestablishment projects. Its location near Lake Erie means it influences regional water quality and provides flood control benefits. Visitors are encouraged to respect the protected habitats and use designated trails to preserve the wildlife sanctuary. Facilities such as a visitor center and interpretive signs help educate about the ecological importance of this refuge.
