About Itanos Wildlife Refuge (Natura 2000 Site)

Itanos Wildlife Refuge is a protected coastal and inland area on the northeastern tip of Crete, known for its rich biodiversity and significant habitats under the Natura 2000 network.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located on the northeastern promontory of Crete, Greece, the Itanos Wildlife Refuge represents an ecologically valuable region characterized by its diverse coastal and dry-land habitats. Spanning coastal wetlands, salt marshes, dunes, garrigue shrublands, and rocky inland terrain, the area supports numerous endemic and threatened species of flora and fauna. The site is recognized under the European Union's Natura 2000 network for its critical role in protecting habitats such as coastal lagoons and Mediterranean pine forests, as well as migratory bird species. The Itanos area holds historical significance with ancient ruins and archaeological sites nearby, reflecting its long human presence. Visitors may explore natural trails that pass through dunes, fragile wetlands, and areas hosting rare orchids and endemic plants. Birdwatching is a highlight, especially for species like the Eleonora’s falcon, harriers, and various waterfowl. The refuge also plays an essential role in conserving marine turtle nesting sites along its sandy beaches. While managed primarily for conservation, the Itanos Wildlife Refuge offers opportunities for eco-tourism, photography, and environmental education. Access is mostly by road from nearby towns, with limited visitor infrastructure to preserve the natural habitats. The area appeals to those interested in Mediterranean ecosystems, biodiversity, and less-traveled natural landscapes on Crete.
