About Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge

Located in the lower Florida Keys, the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary for diverse wildlife including its namesake bird. It's prime spot for birdwatching and exploring serene coastal landscapes.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, covering approximately 200,000 acres of open water and land habitat in the lower Florida Keys. It primarily exists to protect the great white heron, but the refuge also shelters a variety of other coastal and marine species. Established in 1938, this refuge comprises mangroves, seagrass beds, and tidal flats which provide important nesting and feeding grounds. Unlike many wildlife refuges, there are no roads or trails, emphasizing a more secluded experience. Visitors can explore the refuge primarily by boat, allowing access to numerous small islands and the rich marine life that inhabits the waters. Birdwatchers will find this refuge rewarding as it hosts pelicans, ospreys, and other coastal birds. It's a peaceful retreat for those interested in eco-tourism, marine exploration, and the beauty of Florida's natural environments.
