Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Clear Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, encompasses approximately 3,200 acres of marshes, wetlands, and upland habitats along the northern shore of Clear Lake. Established in 1938, the refuge plays a vital role in providing sanctuary for migratory birds and numerous wildlife species native to the Midwest. It is characterized by diverse wetland ecosystems including cattail marshes, emergent wetlands, and open water areas which support a variety of waterfowl, shorebirds, and other aquatic species.

The refuge is especially significant for migratory songbirds and waterfowl, with peak birding seasons in spring and fall when thousands of ducks and geese pass through or winter here. Visitors can enjoy excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly from designated observation blinds and boardwalks that minimize disturbance to sensitive habitats.
