About Aransas National Wildlife Refuge

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is a renowned haven for wildlife, especially the endangered whooping cranes that migrate here. Its diverse ecosystem offers visitors unique wildlife viewing opportunities by the Texas Gulf Coast.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, located along the Texas Gulf Coast, spans more than 115,000 acres of vital habitats that include coastal prairies, tidal estuaries, and oak mottes. Established in 1937, it serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds and is famously known for being the winter home to the critically endangered whooping crane. The refuge's varied landscapes support an array of wildlife, with alligators, bobcats, and over 400 bird species making it a prime spot for wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can explore this rich environment through a network of trails and a popular auto tour loop that provides access to viewing areas perfect for photography and birdwatching. Historically, the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes and later saw Spanish colonial expeditions pass through. Today, conservation efforts focus heavily on habitat restoration and protection of the diverse species that find sanctuary here.
