About Wildcat Ridge Wildlife Management Area

Wildcat Ridge Wildlife Management Area is located in the New Jersey Highlands region, spanning portions of Morris and Passaic counties. This protected area encompasses rugged terrain, rocky ridges, forested slopes, and several small wetlands and streams that contribute to the watershed of the area. The geography is characterized by steep hills and ledges with abundant hard rock outcroppings, providing scenic overlooks and habitat variety. Ecologically, it supports mixed deciduous forests dominated by oak, hickory, and maple species, along with rhododendron thickets and mountain laurel in shaded, moist coves. The diverse plant communities create habitat for numerous wildlife species, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, black bear, and a variety of songbirds and raptors. The Wildlife Management Area is managed for both conservation and public recreation, with emphasis on wildlife habitat improvement and sustainable hunting opportunities. Hiking is a key activity, with a network of trails that appeal to both casual day hikers and more dedicated outdoor enthusiasts. Home to the historic Wildcat Ridge Trail, visitors can enjoy rocky ridges and panoramic views of the surrounding Highlands region. The area also supports educational programs focused on regional ecology and responsible outdoor ethics. Fishing in nearby streams and limited primitive camping further enhance the visitor experience. With its location near more urbanized New Jersey communities, Wildcat Ridge serves as an accessible natural area that helps protect regional biodiversity and connect people with the outdoors.
