About Tappan Lake Wildlife Area

Tappan Lake Wildlife Area is located in Harrison County, Ohio, surrounding the large reservoir known as Tappan Lake, which spans over 2,350 acres. The wildlife area encompasses approximately 3,992 acres of managed wetlands, forests, and open water habitats designed to support a wide variety of species. The region’s mixed hardwood forests and aquatic ecosystems provide nesting grounds for waterfowl and songbirds, while supporting populations of white-tailed deer, turkey, and small game. Originally created with the construction of Tappan Dam in the 1930s, the area was later designated and managed as a wildlife area to promote conservation and outdoor recreation. Visitors enjoy fishing for species such as largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill, as well as hunting during regulated seasons. Hiking trails and boat ramps allow for immersive exploration of the natural landscape. The wildlife area is also a popular spot for birdwatchers to observe waterfowl migration and breeding. Recreational amenities include several parking areas, primitive boat launches, and designated hunting zones. Its proximity to nearby towns and accessibility make it a well-visited location for those seeking peaceful outdoor experiences with abundant wildlife viewing opportunities.
