About Stiles Wildlife Area

Stiles Wildlife Area spans approximately 29,000 acres in Oconto County, Wisconsin. The area is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and is primarily dedicated to wildlife habitat preservation, hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation. The landscape includes a mosaic of wetlands, marshes, hardwood and pine forests, and grasslands, creating a rich environment for a wide range of animal species, especially migratory birds and waterfowl. The Stiles Wildlife Area is part of the larger Green Bay watershed and is characterized by its wetland complex that supports wood ducks, mallards, Canada geese, and other waterfowl, along with deer, turkey, and small mammals. Visitors enjoy fishing in the many streams and ponds, with species such as northern pike and panfish commonly found. The area features multiple access points, boat ramps, and parking areas, accommodating activities including hunting during designated seasons, birdwatching, hiking, and snowmobiling in winter months. The wildlife area was established in the 1950s through land acquisition aimed at restoring and protecting critical waterfowl habitat that had been affected by agricultural and logging practices. Its mix of upland and wetland ecosystems draws outdoor enthusiasts seeking quiet, nature-focused experiences. The abundant trails and roads offer access for exploration, and the area's relative remoteness contributes to its appeal as a destination for observing Wisconsin’s native wildlife in a largely unspoiled setting.
