About Silver Creek Wildlife Management Area

Located in south-central Idaho near the town of Picabo, Silver Creek Wildlife Management Area encompasses approximately 9,000 acres centered around the pristine waters of Silver Creek, a spring-fed stream known for its clarity and ecological richness. This area is managed by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game with a focus on habitat preservation and wildlife management, particularly for migratory birds, fish, and other native species. The gently meandering creek supports a healthy population of rainbow trout and brown trout, making it one of the premier fly fishing destinations in the western United States. Silver Creek’s wide riparian zones and surrounding sagebrush steppe provide critical habitat for a diverse range of birds, including trumpeter swans, great blue herons, sandhill cranes, and a variety of waterfowl. The area's history includes early ranching and irrigation development, but its transformation into a protected wildlife area has preserved the ecosystem and enhanced its value for outdoor recreation and conservation education. Visitors come to Silver Creek to enjoy hiking along the creek’s edge, wildlife viewing from designated boardwalks and observation points, and photographic opportunities amid the scenic riverine and wetland landscapes. The WMA also supports seasonal hunting and regulated fishing under strict permits to maintain ecological balance. Its tranquil setting, abundance of wildlife, and world-class fishery make it a highly regarded destination for outdoor enthusiasts interested in sustainable nature experiences.
