About Pepacton Wildlife Management Area

Pepacton Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses roughly 22,000 acres across the Catskill Mountains in Delaware County, New York. This protected area primarily serves as a wildlife conservation and hunting management zone, providing critical habitat for species including white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, and various small game and bird species. The terrain comprises dense hardwood forests, mixed conifers, steep hillsides, and riparian corridors that follow tributaries feeding into the Pepacton Reservoir, part of the New York City water supply system. While Pepacton WMA is not a developed recreational park, it offers excellent opportunities for backcountry hiking, hunting, wildlife photography, and primitive camping, appealing to outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude in a relatively undeveloped landscape. The area’s proximity to the reservoir and partially intersecting public fishing waters also make it a destination for anglers focusing on trout streams and smaller lakes. Access is mainly via rugged forest roads with few marked trails, so visitors need to be prepared for navigation challenges and self-reliance. The WMA is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), focusing on habitat improvement and sustainable hunting. Seasonal changes transform the forest from vibrant autumn colors to snow-covered winter landscape, offering varied experiences throughout the year. Pepacton WMA’s relatively remote location and natural conditions provide a valuable refuge for wildlife and people seeking quiet natural settings away from more developed recreational areas in the Catskills.
