About Little Indian Creek Wildlife Management Area

Little Indian Creek Wildlife Management Area is a 1,400-acre protected natural space located in Calhoun County, West Virginia, that provides important habitat for a variety of game species and native wildlife. Established to support wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation, the area features a mix of mature hardwood forests, gently rolling hills, and small stream corridors including the stream after which it is named—Little Indian Creek. These water features contribute aquatic habitat for species such as smallmouth bass and native amphibians. The area is managed primarily for hunting and wildlife viewing, with abundant populations of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, and small game species like squirrel and rabbit. Birdwatchers can also spot species associated with forest and riparian environments. Little Indian Creek WMA offers hiking opportunities on informal trails through forested terrain, as well as seasonal hunting during designated state seasons. The terrain is moderate with elevations that provide scenic views over forested hollows typical of the Appalachian Plateau. There are no developed campgrounds within the WMA, but nearby state parks and forests offer camping options. Visitors often appreciate the area's quiet atmosphere for wildlife observation and backcountry experiences. Access is generally via logging roads and small county routes. As a Wildlife Management Area, its primary focus is on sustainable wildlife populations and public hunting access, but it also attracts naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a rustic experience in West Virginia’s hill country.
