About Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area

Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area encompasses more than 19,000 acres of wetland marshes, open water, and mudflats located along the southern edge of Farmington Bay on the Great Salt Lake in northern Utah. Established to protect critical habitat for migratory waterfowl and shorebirds, the area supports hundreds of thousands of birds annually, including large populations of ducks, geese, swans, and other water birds. The management area is part of the larger Great Salt Lake ecosystem, providing essential breeding, nesting, and feeding grounds for species such as the American white pelican, various species of ducks, Canada geese, and the endangered western snowy plover. The landscape features a mosaic of open water basins interspersed with cattail and bulrush wetlands, mudflats, and some upland habitats. Recreationally, it is a premier destination for birdwatching, photography, and nature study, particularly during fall and spring migrations. Several viewing areas and trails allow visitors to observe wildlife with minimal disturbance. Hunting of certain waterfowl species is permitted during regulated seasons. The Farmington Bay area also plays a role in educating the public about wetland conservation and Great Salt Lake ecology and is managed cooperatively by Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Its proximity to Salt Lake City makes it accessible for day trips as well as educational group visits. Visitors experience the unique landscape shaped by the lake’s shallow and saline waters, supporting one of North America's most important migratory bird habitats.
