About Big Sand Lake Wildlife Area

Located in Sawyer County in north-central Wisconsin, Big Sand Lake Wildlife Area encompasses a mix of forested wetlands, lakes, and upland habitats spanning over 9,000 acres. The area centers around Big Sand Lake and includes several smaller lakes, ponds, and marshes that support a rich diversity of wildlife. This protected area was established to conserve habitat for waterfowl, deer, and other game as well as numerous bird species, making it popular among hunters and birdwatchers alike. The landscape features a mosaic of lowland conifer swamps, hardwood forests primarily of maple, birch, and aspen, and open wetlands that provide ideal breeding and feeding grounds for mammals, fish, and migratory birds. The area is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with emphasis on maintaining habitat quality and public hunting access. Besides hunting in fall and early winter, visitors can fish for northern pike, bass, and panfish during warmer months. Hiking and wildlife observation are enjoyable here, though developed trail systems are limited. The quiet, largely remote nature of the landscape offers a peaceful setting for nature photographers and paddlers. Deer, black bears, and elusive otters are among the mammals frequenting the wildlife area, while osprey and bald eagles regularly soar overhead. In winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are possible on informal routes. Overall, Big Sand Lake Wildlife Area provides a well-preserved, varied habitat important for both wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation.
