About Rampart Range Wilderness

Rampart Range Wilderness is a rugged, forested wilderness within Colorado's Pike National Forest, offering a peaceful escape with diverse hiking opportunities and pristine natural scenery.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Rampart Range Wilderness spans over 22,000 acres in the Front Range of Colorado, west of Colorado Springs. It features steep granite ridges, dense conifer forests, and high-elevation meadows. The wilderness area is part of the Pike National Forest and serves to protect the natural landscape from development and motorized use. Ecologically, it includes mixed forests of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and aspen, providing habitat for mule deer, black bears, mountain lions, and numerous bird species. The area’s rugged terrain is made up of granite formations, rocky outcrops, and narrow ridgelines, attracting hikers and backpackers seeking solitude in a relatively close proximity to the Front Range urban corridor. Key recreation includes hiking on trails such as the Herman Gulch Trail and Bison Peak Trail, backpacking, wildlife viewing, and photography. Historically, the range was influenced by mining and logging activities but now is managed to maintain wilderness character. Notable landmarks include Bison Peak, one of the highest summits in the wilderness offering panoramic views of the Front Range, and the enchanting Herman Gulch with its seasonal stream and wildflowers. The wilderness appeals to day hikers, backpackers, and outdoor enthusiasts looking for a challenging and less crowded alternative to more famous nearby parks.
