Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness encompasses approximately 151,435 acres of the majestic North Cascades in Washington state. Known for its rugged terrain, it features high mountain ridges, deep valleys, and numerous alpine lakes, including Oval, Boiling, and Eagle Lakes. The area is home to diverse ecosystems ranging from dense forests of Douglas fir and Western hemlock to alpine tundra above the treeline. Wildlife abounds with species such as black bears, mountain goats, mule deer, and a variety of birdlife. The area's history includes stewardship by indigenous peoples long before it became a designated wilderness in 1984.
