Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Holy Cross Wilderness spans over 122,000 acres in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado. Named after the prominent Mount of the Holy Cross, this area is characterized by high alpine ridges, dense forests, and expansive meadows. The wilderness is a critical habitat for diverse wildlife, including elk, deer, black bears, and a variety of bird species. Established in 1980, it boasts a rich history, partly due to the infamous cross of snow on the eastern face of the Mount of the Holy Cross that has drawn visitors and adventurers for centuries. Key recreation opportunities include an extensive network of trails for hiking and backpacking, offering stunning views and serene natural settings. Visitors are captivated by the diverse ecosystems, from montane forests and subalpine regions to alpine tundra, with wildflowers painting the landscape in summer. The lack of motorized access ensures a true wilderness experience, appealing to those seeking solitude and a chance to connect deeply with nature.
