About Cohase Wilderness Area

Cohase Wilderness Area offers remote, rugged terrain spanning the Connecticut River Gorge, featuring dense forests, steep cliffs, and a network of challenging hiking trails that appeal to wilderness enthusiasts seeking solitude and natural beauty.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Cohase Wilderness Area is a federally designated wilderness located in northern New Hampshire and southern Vermont, encompassing lands within the Connecticut Lakes Headwaters region. It covers a rugged landscape marked by deep river gorges carved by the Connecticut River and its tributaries. The area includes steep cliffs, mixed northern hardwood and conifer forests, wetlands, and a variety of aquatic ecosystems. The wilderness was established to protect this pristine section of the river corridor and surrounding forest from development and to preserve its ecological integrity. Its name "Cohase" is derived from an Abenaki word meaning 'shed rock,' referencing the region's rocky cliffs.

This wilderness area is characterized by its remoteness and limited trail infrastructure, attracting experienced hikers, anglers, and paddlers who seek a more backcountry experience. The diverse habitats support moose, black bear, river otter, and a variety of bird species, making it a great destination for wildlife viewing. Popular activities include hiking along rugged ridgelines and riverbanks, fishing for native trout species, and paddling portions of the Connecticut River. The Cohase Wilderness lies within the White Mountain National Forest boundary but is unique for its large tracts of wild land with few visitor amenities, preserving a strong sense of isolation.

Its wilderness status means there are no developed campgrounds, motorized vehicles, or permanent structures, offering visitors a chance to experience a natural environment largely unchanged by human hands. Access points are often remote, and trips here require careful planning. The area's steep terrain and variable weather contribute to challenging but rewarding outdoor adventures. The Cohase Wilderness Area appeals mainly to those who appreciate solitude, rugged scenery, and a wilderness experience off the beaten path.
