The Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area is the only congressionally designated wilderness area in Indiana located within the Hoosier National Forest. Covering about 13,000 acres, it offers a haven for those seeking solitude and nature immersion. The wilderness was established in 1982 and features a diverse ecosystem with hardwood forests, sandstone formations, and scenic vistas. Historically, this land was used for logging and agriculture, but it has been restored to provide habitat for an array of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 37 miles of trails suitable for hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding. The Sycamore Trail is particularly popular for its beautiful views and diverse terrain.
