Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Alpine Lakes Wilderness, located in the central Cascades of Washington State, spans approximately 394,000 acres. This rugged wilderness features some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the Pacific Northwest, characterized by jagged peaks, dense forests, and pristine alpine lakes. The area was designated as a wilderness in 1976 to preserve its unique geological formations and diverse ecosystems. Wildlife includes black bears, mountain goats, and a variety of bird species. Hikers and backpackers flock to the region for its extensive trail system, including sections of the Pacific Crest Trail, providing access to breathtaking vistas and secluded campsites. The Enchantments, a particularly popular and visually striking area within the wilderness, is known for its granite peaks and crystal-clear lakes. Visitors are drawn to the Wilderness for the opportunity to engage in activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, and photography while enjoying relative solitude and natural beauty.
