About Cederberg Wilderness Area

Cederberg Wilderness Area

The Cederberg Wilderness Area spans approximately 71,000 hectares of rugged terrain located about 300 kilometers north of Cape Town in Western Cape, South Africa. It is characterized by towering red sandstone cliffs, deep gorges, and indigenous fynbos vegetation endemic to the Cape Floral Region. The area's geology and diverse ecosystems provide habitat to numerous endemic and threatened species, including the rare Clanwilliam cedar tree. Historically, the Cederberg is significant for its well-preserved San rock art sites, featuring thousands of ancient paintings created by the Khoisan people, offering a unique cultural heritage alongside natural beauty. Outdoor recreation opportunities focus mainly on hiking and climbing, with over 200 kilometers of trails crossing remote landscapes and natural rock pools ideal for swimming. Popular landmarks include the Maltese Cross rock formation, Wolfberg Arch, and the Stadsaal Caves where the San rock art can be observed. Its wilderness designation means minimal infrastructure and a strong emphasis on conservation, attracting backcountry campers and keen hikers who seek solitude and pristine nature. The region also supports diverse wildlife including dassies (rock hyrax), baboons, and various raptors. Visitors are drawn by the panoramic vistas, the combination of natural history and cultural significance, and the calm atmosphere that contrasts with the bustle of nearby urban centers.
