About San Pedro Parks Wilderness

San Pedro Parks Wilderness is a designated wilderness area located in northern New Mexico within the Santa Fe National Forest. Covering alpine terrain between 9,000 and 11,000 feet in elevation, it features vast meadows, dense stands of spruce, fir, and aspen trees, and clear trout streams. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and open grassy parks, creating a unique habitat compared to the more rugged canyons nearby. Established in 1965, the wilderness preserves a largely unaltered ecosystem that supports mule deer, elk, black bear, turkey, and a variety of bird species, making it an excellent destination for wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can explore approximately 25 miles of trails that range from easy to moderate, passing through lush meadows and alongside streams, including San Pedro Creek. Anglers are drawn to the area for its well-stocked trout waters. The wilderness also offers backcountry camping in a remote setting with minimal human impact and limited facilities, appealing to hikers seeking solitude and natural beauty. In winter, the snow-covered terrain is popular for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Accessibility is generally via forest roads that can be rough or seasonally closed, so planning is essential. San Pedro Parks Wilderness is favored for its peaceful environment, clear night skies, and rich ecological diversity, appealing to outdoor enthusiasts who value quiet wilderness hiking, fishing, and wildlife observation.
