About Mt. Jefferson Wilderness

Designated in 1964 under the Wilderness Act, Mt. Jefferson Wilderness protects over 109,000 acres of wild land dominated by the towering, glaciated Mt. Jefferson, the second highest peak in Oregon at 10,497 feet. Situated within the Willamette and Deschutes National Forests in central Oregon, the wilderness features a mix of high mountain peaks, deep glacial valleys, and numerous alpine lakes formed in volcanic basins. The area supports diverse ecosystems, including dense old-growth Douglas fir, western hemlock forests, and alpine meadows that bloom with wildflowers in summer. Wildlife commonly seen includes black bears, mule deer, mountain goats, and various bird species such as the northern spotted owl and Clark’s nutcracker. Recreation here is centered on backpacking, strenuous day hikes, technical climbing routes on Mt. Jefferson, and fishing in pristine lakes and streams. Popular trails such as the Jefferson Park Loop offer stunning views of rugged volcanic ridges, waterfalls, and glacial cirques. Winter brings opportunities for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing but also heightens hazards like avalanches. The wilderness appeals to visitors seeking remote and scenic terrain with a mix of challenging and moderate outdoor experiences. Its volcanic geology and distinctive alpine environment draw naturalists and photographers year-round, while its accessibility from nearby towns ensures both casual and expert visitors can explore its rugged beauty.
