About East Humboldt Wilderness

The East Humboldt Wilderness encompasses approximately 36,900 acres along the eastern portion of the East Humboldt Range, located in Elko County, Nevada. This wilderness area features steep cliffs, towering peaks, glacially carved U-shaped valleys, alpine lakes, and dense forests of pine and aspen. The high elevation creates a cooler climate in summer and heavy snowfall in winter, fostering a unique ecosystem within the Great Basin region. Wildlife such as mule deer, mountain lions, and the occasional bighorn sheep inhabit the rugged terrain, while bird watchers can enjoy viewing raptors and migratory songbirds. Formed by ancient geological processes, the range has a complex history of mining and Native American use before being designated as wilderness in 1989 under the Nevada Wilderness Protection Act. Visitors are drawn to the wilderness for its remote hiking trails like the popular Angel Lake Trail, scenic overlooks of the Ruby Valley below, and opportunities for fishing in several alpine lakes including Smith Lake. The East Humboldt Wilderness offers solitude and a true backcountry experience, appealing to backpackers, anglers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts. The area is adjacent to the Ruby Mountains and incorporates parts of the Humboldt National Forest, ensuring a well-managed natural environment. Winter sports such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are possible during colder months, though access can be limited due to snow. The wilderness status restricts mechanized use, preserving its natural condition and challenging visitors to self-reliance and Leave No Trace ethics.
