About Badger Creek Wilderness

Located east of Mount Hood in the northern Cascade Range of Oregon, Badger Creek Wilderness covers diverse landscapes ranging from dry, open pine forests to rugged volcanic ridges. Established in 1984 under the Oregon Wilderness Act, this 29,057-acre wilderness area is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The wilderness encompasses parts of the Badger Creek and East Fork Hood River drainages, featuring steep canyon walls and rocky outcrops. The terrain supports a variety of ecosystems including ponderosa pine, western larch, Douglas-fir, and mixed conifers at higher elevations. Wildlife is abundant, with species such as mule deer, black bear, mountain lion, and various birds. The area includes historical features related to early homesteading and Native American use. Outdoor recreation here centers on hiking, camping, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. Key trails follow creeks to waterfall viewpoints like the striking Badger Creek Falls and offer access to rugged ridgelines with panoramic views of Mount Hood and the surrounding Cascades. Visitors are drawn to the quieter, less crowded nature of this wilderness compared to nearby high-profile areas. The wilderness's blend of forest ecosystems, open slopes, and volcanic geology provide a rewarding experience for hikers seeking solitude and natural beauty. Accessibility via forest roads allows both day trips and overnight adventures, though vehicle access may be seasonal. Its proximity to Hood River and the Columbia River Gorge makes Badger Creek Wilderness a valued natural refuge for locals and visiting outdoor enthusiasts alike.
