About Little Miami State and National Scenic River

The Little Miami State and National Scenic River is a protected waterway in southwestern Ohio offering outstanding paddling, fishing, and wildlife viewing opportunities along a nationally recognized scenic river corridor.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Little Miami State and National Scenic River stretches approximately 85 miles through southwestern Ohio, following the Little Miami River from near Springfield to its confluence with the Ohio River at the eastern edge of Cincinnati. The river corridor is designated both as a State Scenic River and a National Scenic River, recognized for its exceptional water quality, ecological diversity, and natural beauty. The landscape along the river features forested hills, limestone cliffs, wetlands, and farmland, providing habitat for numerous wildlife species including bald eagles, river otters, and several fish species like smallmouth bass and muskellunge. Historically, the river played an important role in regional settlement and transportation, and several historic towns and structures lie within the corridor. Outdoor recreation is a key draw, with paddling being the most popular activity due to the river’s clear water and varied flow, accessible from multiple public launch sites. Fishing, hiking, and wildlife observation also attract visitors, and several trail systems run adjacent to or near the river, including sections of the Little Miami Scenic Trail—a multiuse path that parallels parts of the river and is one of the longest paved trails in Ohio. The river corridor appeals year-round, with spring and fall being popular for fishing and paddling, summer for camping and wildlife viewing, and winter for quieter nature experiences. Its protected status ensures that the river's natural and cultural resources are conserved while providing extensive recreational opportunities within close proximity to urban centers like Cincinnati.
