Quehanna Wild Area is Pennsylvania’s largest wild area offering vast forested landscapes, rugged terrain, and diverse outdoor recreation opportunities including hiking, wildlife viewing, and primitive camping.
Quehanna Wild Area spans over 50,000 acres within the Elk and Sproul State Forests of north-central Pennsylvania. Created in the 1960s to protect the region from development and maintain a relatively untouched natural environment, it represents one of the largest wild forest tracts in the state. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, steep ravines, dense mixed hardwood and conifer forests, streams, and several small lakes, providing diverse habitats for wildlife such as black bears, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species. The area was originally impacted by early 20th-century lumbering and oil drilling but has since recovered, offering a largely primitive experience without designated roads or facilities. Visitors can explore an extensive network of challenging trails, including parts of the Susquehannock Trail System, which winds through the wild area’s rugged terrain. Quehanna also encompasses Quehanna Wild Area’s Quehanna Loop Trail and is managed for both conservation and low-impact recreation. Hunting, dispersed camping, wildlife watching, and fishing in its cold-water streams are common activities. The remoteness and limited amenities create a more solitary outdoor experience that appeals to backpackers, mountain bikers, and anglers seeking a wilderness atmosphere fairly close to populated areas. Its mix of forest types and undisturbed natural areas make it an important refuge for biodiversity in Pennsylvania.
